In spring 1989 hundreds of thousands of students demonstrated on Tian'anmen Square in Beijing for political reforms and more democracy. The Chinese military put an end to the protests on 3 and 4 June. Xu Yong, aged 35 at the time, was there and instinctively recorded the scenes with his camera. Subsequently, all information and photos were strictly censored by the Chinese government. The shots were stored in Xu Yong's archive for 25 years. The exhibition at the GJS is now showing a selection of the photographs.
